ACCESS FAQs

Q: What is ACCESS service?

A: ACCESS is a shared ride paratransit type of service within Kitsap County, in compliance with the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA). ACCESS service is available for qualified passengers unable to use Kitsap Transit's regular fixed route buses some or all of the time. An application is required prior to service. ADA paratransit eligibility is not based solely on the presence of a condition or disability, but on how the condition or disability affects a rider’s ability to use the fixed route service under all possible conditions.

Some non-ADA services are also available.

Q: My mom is disabled. How do I know if she is eligible for ACCESS services?

A: Kitsap Transit ACCESS is designed to provide transportation for qualified seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to use Kitsap Transit regular fixed route buses some or all of the time due to a condition or disability. Varying levels of service are offered based on individual needs. Please see the eligibility application for more information.

Q: I have a Regional Reduced Fare Permit (RRFP); does that make me qualified for ACCESS service?

A: No. An RRFP does not automatically qualify a person for ACCESS service. Eligibility is based on a rider's functional abilities. Eligibility is not based on fixed route bus service availability and times, a medical diagnosis, qualifying for SSI disability, possessing a disabled parking placard, the inability to drive, income levels, or a language barrier.

Q: How can I apply for ACCESS?

A: You can print the application here, or call ACCESS Customer Service at 360-479-7272, 1-800-422-2877 or TDD 360-377-9874. The application process may take up to 21 days.

Q: I've broken my leg and need transportation to my doctor's appointments. If the ACCESS application process can take up to 21 days, how do I arrange for transportation?

A: Kitsap Transit ACCESS is able to provide temporary eligibility for individuals needing transportation due to an unforeseen condition or injury which limits use of the routed bus service.  Please call 360-478-6914 for eligibility information.

Q: Is ACCESS just for medical trips?

A: No. Kitsap Transit ACCESS provides transportation to various locations within Kitsap County. If you are fully eligible to ride and ACCESS serves your location, you can use ACCESS to go shopping, visit friends or even go to work.

Q: I am eligible and have been approved for ACCESS service. How do I schedule a ride?

A: Simply call 1-800-422-2877 or TDD 360-377-9874. The Kitsap Transit ACCESS reservation line is open from 8:00am to 4:00 p.m. Sunday through Friday and most holidays. Reservations can be made one to seven days in advance. Online reservations can be made by clicking here and are accepted Monday through Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm and Sundays 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Q: How do I cancel an ACCESS trip if I need to?

A: Cancellations should be made no less than two hours before your schedule trip by calling ACCESS Customer Service at 360-479-7272, 1-800-422-2877 or TDD 360-377-9874.

Q: What days and hours is ACCESS Service available?

A: Kitsap Transit ACCESS operates service Monday through Saturday. Service hours vary by area. For information on the hours the ACCESS service is available in your area, please click here or call the reservation line at 360-479-7272 or 1-800-422-2877.

Q: What does it cost to ride ACCESS?

A: The fare for ACCESS service is $2.00 one-way full cash fare. There is no cash reduced-fare on ACCESS service.  An additional $1.00 is charged for trips outside of the normal service area. Riders eligible for ACCESS services are also eligible to purchase a $25.00 reduced fare monthly bus pass. Riders who use only ACCESS service do not need an ORCA card to ride and can purchase their monthly pass by calling Customer Service at 1-800-501-7433. Riders who use both ACCESS and a routed bus or Foot Ferry should purchase their pass loaded on an ORCA card.

Q: How much assistance can the ACCESS operator provide me?

A: Operators can help you board and de-board the bus.  Operators are unable to enter residences to assist a passenger. If you are in need of assistance inside your home, please contact our office and we can refer you to local agencies that provide in-home services.

Q: Rides need to be scheduled in advance. If I am going to a medical appointment, do I have to give a return time? I don't know when I will be done.

A: You will need to schedule your return trip when you call in your reservation. Your doctor's office should be able to help you estimate the length of time you'll need.
